New Work at VisArts: Maryland, My Maryland!

I'm really excited to showcase some work from my new series, Maryland, My Maryland! The work will be on display at VisArts, for their Juried Exhibition, NextGen 5.0. The show is on view from July 11, 2018 to August 19, 2018.

The series explores 'Maryland, My Maryland!' is a photographic series that documents the remnants of confederate and civil war history in Central Maryland. As the northern most state on the Mason Dixon line, Maryland has quite an extensive history within the civil war, however, the majority of Central Maryland lives in ignorance and avoidance of this history. This series examines the landscape of Central Maryland through the eyes of a young African American woman, by the means of examination and documentation of contemporary remnants of Maryland's racist and segregationist history. This is includes archival presentations of racist state newspaper propaganda, the 2017 removal of confederate statues, as well as cultural markers of residents’ own racist propaganda in contemporary Maryland. The work is not intended to shame Maryland's history, but to highlight the aspects of racism that are quite heavily embedded into the structure of our landscape, but are seldom discussed or acknowledged.
