This is officially my first blog post, so naturally, I'm gonna start with an introduction.
My name is Akea, as I'm sure you've figured out by now, pronounced (uh-key-yuh). Akea Brionne (pronounced Bree-on) is my full name! I sometimes wish I had a long, interesting story about how my momma chose my name, but I don't! She was less than thrilled to be pregnant, and even less excited to be having a girl, so she didn't spend too much time thinking of my name; she let her godmother choose it.
I think a name has so much agency in your identity, and if I'm being quite honest, I don't think I've fully come into my name. I've always felt a bit awkward saying it, as if I haven't completely earned it? I feel that shifting with time, as I grow older, but it's something I've always thought about, the power of a name; your name.
I've searched for years to figure out what my name means, but have only found two specific references with my name. The first is a Hawaiian King, who was the first king to found a kingdom in the afterlife, but I wasn't too fascinated when I discovered this lol, so I've yet to tell people this story. The second, is through the caption of a photograph taken in the 19th century, of Elk Tongue and his daughter Akea, which translates to "A Nice Walk." This name is from the Kiowan tribe, an indigenous tribe from the Great Plains. I've tried for years to get more information on this tribe, the name, the translation, and the people in the photograph; but like most of the history impacted by genocide, assimilation, and white supremacy; that history has been intentionally destroyed and/or left out. So all I have is this photo, but somehow it's one of the most important photos I have in my possession!
I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana but I now live in Baltimore, Maryland. I'm a dual major in Photography and Humanistic Studies with a Sustainability and Social Practice minor, at a problematic, gentrifying, and incredibly resourceful private art institution. I don't have much else to say, in terms of how to introduce myself to the curious souls who've decided to visit this page. So I'll keep it short and explain this blog is mainly being started as a way to record myself and my journey.
Of course, as a photographer, I'm incredibly fascinated with capturing my life through photographs. But I accept there are some things photographs can't say, so I'm choosing to write those things on my blog. This is going to act as a diary in some ways, voicing my thoughts and opinions, and reflecting on travels and the journey's I will embark on. This is in all honesty entirely for myself, and in no way serves a purpose other than for me to be able to look back on my life; but I welcome anyone who's interested enough to follow my story.
